New stamps from India…

India Post issued two postage stamps on 2nd and 3rd September to commemorate Surndranath Johar and Dev Narayan.

 

Shri Devnarayan  an ancient Gurjar warrior from Rajasthan who is believed to have been an incarnation of Lord Vishnu, is worshipped as a folk deity, mostly in Rajasthan and north-western Madhya Pradesh.According to tradition, he was born to Sri Savai Bhoj and Sadu mata Gurjari on the seventh day of the bright half (shukla saptami) of the month of Maagh in the Hindu Calendar in Vikram Samvat 968 (911 AD).According to one view historica Devnarayan belonged to 10th century of Vikram Samvat, according another view, he lived in between 1200-1400 (Vikram Samvat era).First view is endorsed by many scholars.The epic of Devnarayan is one of the longest and most popular religious oral narratives of Rajasthan. The epic of Devnarayan has been classified under the category of martial epics.

Shri Surendranath Jauhar (13August.1903 - 2.September1986)  was a freedom fighter. He   joined the freedom struggle at the age of 16 in response to a call to the youth of the country by Mahatma Gandhi. As a leading Congressman of Delhi, he was thrown behind the bars several times, two of the longest spells being 15 months for reading the Purna Swaraj pledge in 1930, and for participating in the Quit India Movement from 1942 to 1944. He became an ardent devotee of Sri Aurobindo and the Mother in 1939. He gave away his land to establish the Sri Aurobindo Ashram – Delhi Branch in 1956, and also became the founder of Sri Aurobindo Education Society, under which he started The Mother’s International School in 1956 and Mirambika in 1982.

A new Post Office to be opened at Chal-Lungnak soon: CPG

Leh, Sept 2 (KNS): On the second day of Ladakh festival-2011, Minister for Tourism Nawang Rigzin Jora inaugurated a photo exhibition organized by the Department of Information at Indoor stadium Leh in which a wide range of portraits depicting the culture, monastic, flora and fauna, landscape and life style of the people of all regions of Ladakh displayed for exhibition for general people till the end of the festival.

Expressing pleasure over the collection of a variety of portraits, the Minister desired to add more pictures of Ladakhi culture and tradition in next photo exhibition.  The photo exhibition was witnessed by a large number of foreign and domestic tourists, besides the local people.

On this occasion, the Minister also inaugurated a Philatelic exhibition organized by Department of Posts in which more than 20,000 postal stamps of International standard were displayed.

After inaugurating the Philatelic exhibition, Jora said that holding of such exhibitions on postal stamps would get to know many countries’ historical figures, flora and fauna, renowned world personalities and Hollywood stars.   He urged the students to get themselves know about the importance of stamps saying that stamps collection is a good hobby.

The Minister welcomed the initiatives of Department of Posts in converting the Post office of Leh city into a Tourist Post Office from September 5th where postal, STD, internet and printing services up to 8 pm would be provided to facilitate the tourists. He also appreciated the Postal Department Leh for providing satisfying postal services to the people.

The Chief Postmaster General (CPG)Mr. Sameul informed as many as 97 post offices are currently working in entire Ladakh region, adding that the Department of Posts is also going to open a new Post Office in Chal-Lungnak this year. The Department of Posts is also holding essay writing and stamp designing competition among the school children and the topper would be rewarded with cash prizes up to Rs. 10,000, he said.

The Executive Councillor Tourism, Gyurmet Dorjey, Deputy Commissioner, Leh Tsering Angchok, besides a large number of students, teachers, officers and prominent citizens were also present on the occasion.
