Sagol Kangjei ( Polo )

Sagol Kangjei is the name of the game of polo played in Manipur. Sagol means pony / horse, kang means a ball or round object, and jei is a stick used for hitting. Polo has, for time immemorial, been a game patronised by the royalty and the upper crust of society, not only in India but abroad. However in the state of Manipur, it has always been a game for the common man. It is a seven - a - side game, the players mounted on ponies.

According to a renowned Sanskrit scholar, Pandit Sharma, Manipuri polo goes back to the year 3100 B.C. Other Manipuri scholars trace the game chronologically to many centuries before Christ ( 2000 - 1500 B.C. ), while some place it around 34 A.D. According to Kangjeiron Purana, which is really the history of hockey in the state, polo was first played in Manipur, and therefore, it got the name Sagol Kangjei - sagol ( horse ) and kangjei ( hockey ).

Manipuri polo symbolises the immense cultural heritage of the state, and great efforts have been put made to raise the standard of this popular game. The prominent patrons of the game were King Kyamba and King Khagemba ( 1597-1672 A.D.), and King Chandra Kirti ( 1850 - 1886 A.D.). The latter, especially, is to be credited with popularising the sport in other parts of the world.

Stamps on Sun Dials

image  image

Date of Issue : 16 December 2014

Israel Post has prepared for issuing a special set of three stamps on the theme “Sundials”- the first tool that allowed people to measure the passing of time. Three beautiful and different sundials found in Israel are depicted on this stamp set. The issue is to be released on the 16th of December.

Sundials in Eretz Israel

The changing shadows cast upon the ground as the sun apparently moved across the sky have caught people’s attention since ancient times. This phenomenon was utilized in planning the sundial, the first tool that allowed people to measure the passing of time and determine the precise time for purposes of work and ritual.

The simplest type of sundial consists of a vertical rod (gnomon) that casts a shadow onto a dial marked with semicircular lines. Over time, sundials were improved and their precision was enhanced. Sundials are referenced in world literature as far back as the Bible.

The Jewish Quarter, Jerusalem

In the early 1970′s, a mobile sundial made of stone was discovered among the ruins of a grand building that was unearthed in an archeological dig in the eastern part of the Jewish Quarter of the Old City of Jerusalem after the Six Day War and given the name “Beit Hamidot” (the measurement house). The dial was approximately 11 cms tall and the elegant etchings along its sides attest to the fact that it was a prestigious item used in a wealthy home in the 1st century.

It is a polar sundial, in which the scale of dates is affixed at a 33 degree angle to the ground, in accordance with the geographic latitude of Acre, and the top of the scale faces toward the pole. A dedication is carved into the front of the dial – “This sundial of the Al Anwar Al Ahmedi Mosque, which was dedicated by the honorable, renowned and magnificent minister Hag Ahmed Pasha Al Jezzar, who shall be rewarded by the forgiving God, is dedicated to benefitting humanity. It was built by Ibrahim Al-Faradi the Kurd in 1201 of the hijra of the prophet”.

Zoharei Chama Synagogue, Jerusalem

In 1908 a large perpendicular sundial was built on the southern wall of the Zoharei Chama synagogue on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem. It was designed and constructed by Moshe Shapira, a Jewish man from the old Yishuv who was born in the Meah She’arim neighborhood. He learned how to make sundials from Aryeh Leib Gordon,a learned educator in Jerusalem at that time, and from studying a book by the Vilna Gaon. The scale of dates is five meters in diameter and marked with lines indicating 5 minute intervals.

The pole that casts the shadow is fixed at an angle, parallel to the earth’s axis. Two reg

image

Date of Issue 4 December 2014

China Post has introduced a special philatelic issue paying tribute to the beuty of Danxia. ‘Danxia’ refers to an impressive and rugged landscape shaped by weathering and erosion on continental red sandstone sedimentary beds.

The site comprises six areas in China’s southern provinces, namely Chishui from Guizhou, Taining from Fujian, Liangshan from Hunan, Danxiashan from Guangdong, Longhushan from Jiangxi and Jianglangshan from Zhejiang. The poetic and panoramic beauty of the cliffs, gorges, waters and trees in Danxia is fully depicted in this stamp issue.

China Danxia was inscribed on the World Heritage List by the World Heritage Committee under the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in 2010. Danxia landforms are characterised by spectacular red cliffs and a range of erosional landforms, including dramatic natural pillars, towers, ravines, valleys and waterfalls.

They are the result of endogenous forces (including tectonic uplift) and exogenous forces (including weathering and erosion) acting on continental red terrigenous sedimentary beds over the millennia. Slovak Philatelist honored on stamp

image

Date of Issue : 5 December 2014

I am pleased to share the information about a postage stamp to be issued in honour of a philatelist. Slovak Post will  release a special commemorative stamp to honor one of its greatest philatelists on the 5th of December.

Severín Zrubec lived, worked and received his degree of Doctor in Laws at the Faculty of Law of the Slovak University (1948) in Bratislava. Severín Zrubec worked as a lawyer in various organisations. He held his final post at the Ministry of Agriculture of the Czechoslovak Socialist Republic (1968 – 1981) until 1982 when he retired. He is buried in his home place.

However, the philatelic public knows Severín Zrubec as a successful exhibitor, journalist, association member, and a member of home and foreign juries assessing exhibits. He took part in organised philately for more than fifty years. He engaged in modern view of philately as a hobby with a significant cultural and social mission. Since 1952, Severín Zrubec was a member of the Association of Slovak Philatelic Societies.

Attempts for re-establishment of the Association of Slovak Philatelists (1969) are also closely connected with his name. He held an office of the association chairman during two terms (1969 − 1979) and then continued as its vice-chairman for another two periods. His activities earned him various awards, for instance, Gold Honorary Medal of the Association of Slovak Philatelists and Laureate of the Prize of the Association of Slovak Philatelists 2000.

Severín Zrubec worked as a member of the Thematic Philately Commission of FIP (1974 - 1984) and International Jury of the Association of Slovak Philatelists (1973 − 2011), as well.  His name has been written in golden letters in the Slovak and European philatelic history. The exhibit “Today Rotary Press Machines Revolve” was displayed at several tens of domestic and foreign exhibitions for twenty eight years. It was awarded four gold, seventeen gilded and seven silver medals at five world’s fairs under the patronage of FIP and twenty two international exhibitions. When finishing his exhibition activity in 1998, Severín Zrubec gifted his extensive thematic collection “Printing and Book” to the Museum of Book Culture in Trnava. However, the good man and excellent philatelist was also a poet engaged in writing for a long time. During 2003 - 2005, he published fourteen short collections of subjective lyric poetry written especially for his friends and acquaintances.

The traditional postage stamp with a coupon annually issued at the occasion of the Postage and Philately Stamp Day is impressively shaped as a trapezium with triangle coupons. It is dominated by his portrait and autograph. Zrubec’s first gold medal awarded at the World Postage Stamp Exhibition PRAGA 1962 extends over the right coupon, while a section of the emblem of the Society of St. Gabriel, he co-founded (1962), is depicted on the left one. FDC includes a postal stationery (J. Fándly, 1991 from Museum of Book Culture) issued by the Union of Slovak Philatelists and sent to his address.

Date of issue : 14 November 2014

Polish Post has already issued its annual Christmas stamps on the 14th of November . Christmas in Poland is a major annual celebration, as in most countries of the Christian world. The observance of Christmas developed gradually over the centuries, beginning in ancient times; combining old pagan customs with the religious ones introduced after the Christianization of Poland by the Catholic Church.

Later influences include mutual permeating of local traditions and various folk cultures. Christmas trees are decorated and lit in family rooms on the day of Christmas Eve. Other trees are placed in most public areas and outside churches. Christmas is called “Boże Narodzenie” in Polish (literally ‘God’s Birth’).

CHILDREN'S POSTAGE STAMPS - FABLES

Every year, almost all world postal administrations publish a special postage stamp issue named "Children's Postage Stamp". The motifs of these stamps are usually the usually the favourite children's pets, fairy tales and literature heroes, children's toys, cartoons. Children's stamps may include educational and corrective topics in animated form, i.e. drawings on certain topics that children normally learn in school: famous scientists and phenomenon that
they study, historical figures and events, sport heroes, pets and attitude to-wards them.... They are all represented in a way that is interesting and understandable to little children.

The theme of this year's Children's Postage Stamp is fable-short story in which animals behave like humans.  Fables are at the same time instructive stories, narrated concisely and with great humour, and containing important life truths.
