Retro.....

Date of Issue : 12 January 2017

Within the area of design, retro means retur- ning to older styles. New products are made in a retro style, but the term also includes old products that become popular again. One good example of this is the string shelf that is depicted on the coil stamp.

Stamp Booklet

Before working on the stamp, I researched what had been written about the retro phenomenon. I noted in particular a quote by William Morris, from England, who was a designer and author during the second half of the 1800s.

Morris said that “the past is not dead, it is living in us, and will be alive in the future which we are now helping to make”. His point is that we do not live our lives today in isolation from the past, and this stamp series shines a spot- light on things we created before.

Maxi cards

The word “retro” has modern connotations, despite it being anchored in the past. We are not referring to the Middle Ages when we call something “retro”. But what products can be considered retro, and why? I think it refers to objects that in some way still speak to us today.

Contemporary objects

Many young families are passionate about retro, and my own family is no exception. Both string book shelves and classic porcelain from Gustavsberg can be found in our home. The sideboard with the red desk lamp that is depic- ted on the stamp belongs to us.

The home office is one of the environments that was included in my assignment for the stamps. Depicted from top to bottom are a hall with vintage clothing, a kitchen where the cabinet with sliding doors is filled with 1950s porcelain and this same porcelain set out on the table. The living room lamp, coffee table and TV furniture are period pieces.

TV furniture, yes. As you can see there is a flat-screen TV there. The presence of the flat-screen TV, bike helmet, stovetop, mobile telephone and laptop illustrates the dialogue between old and new that can be found in most modern homes.

2017 Maltese Presidency of the Council of the European Union

Date of Issue : 12 January 2017

Here is a  Miniature sheet on Flag theme, issued by Malta Post.Every 6 months the Presidency of the Council of the European Union (EU) rotates among the EU member states. Member states holding the Presidency work in'trios'. This system was introduced in 2009 as part of the Lisbon Treaty. The 'trio' works on a common agenda through long-term goals that are addressed by the Council over 18 months.

The current trio consists of the Netherlands, Slovakia and Malta. The Netherlands held the Presidency between January and June 2016 and Slovakia between July and December 2016. Malta will be holding the Presidency between January and June 2017 and will work on a detailed 6-month programme on the basis of the 18-month programme set by the 'trio'.

A logo for Malta's EU Presidency was chosen from 29 submissions by students. It represents the Maltese EU Presidency in a stylised interpretation of the Maltese Cross. This represents a bridge between the historical national values and the multi-faceted fellowship characterizing the European Union. The Cross is pointing in all direction, signifying Malta's place in the world. The colourful logo represents the dusk and the sunrise that suggest the continual process of rebirth, renewal and reunion.

School Days..

Date of Issue : 17 November 2017

Here is a  beautiful set of stamps of Pro Juventure series    from Swiss Post on the theme of schooldays with a pair of motifs: Learning and playing, or blackboard and playground, that is to say Pythagoras and hopscotch. The two poles of our schooldays, the two areas in which we gather a multitude of experiences that will shape our subsequent lives.

Acquiring knowledge and having fun: both were crucial for our development. Think back to your own childhood. What memories remain unforgettable? How did you fare back then? And how did your colleagues get on? Sure, not everyone had the same opportunities, just like today. And that’s exactly the problem that Pro Juventute is seeking to address – by creating equal opportunities for  young people. The money raised from these annual stamp issues  support projects working in this area.

Israel’s International Year of Light stamp recently received the Nexofil award for the most beautiful stamp of 2015.The awards were presented Oct. 28, 2016 in Spain. A Swedish Ingrid Bergman stamp was the runner-up, and a Croatian stamp placed third.
The winners were determined by an international jury comprised of philatelists from more than 20 countries. Issued Feb. 10, 2015, the 11.80-shekel stamp from Israel commemorated both the International Year of Light and the 2013 Nobel Prize in chemistry (Scott 2050).
The stamp design represents the Schrodinger equation on the left and the protein rhodopsin on the right. Shown on the attached tab, or label, are the emblem of the International Year of Light and representation of rods and cones, two types of light-sensitive cells in the human retina.
Sweden’s 14-krona Ingrid Bergman stamp issued Aug. 20, 2015, is part of a joint issue with the United States honoring the 100th birth anniversary of the actress (Sweden Scott 2756, United States 5012).
Both the Swedish and U.S. stamps were based on a photograph of Bergman taken by celebrity photographer Laszlo Willinger. The Swedish stamp was designed by Gustaf Martensson and engraved by Lars Sjooblom.
Martin Pingel, head of design at Postnord Stamps, described the design as “a simple, powerful depiction of one of the world’s most well-known actresses of the 20th century.”
The Croatian stamp, issued July 9, 2015 (Scott 964), was part of the multination Euromed series featuring boats of the Mediterranean.
The 5.80-kuna stamp pictures a cargo vessel known as a bracera. The stamp design by Dean Roksandie is based on a photograph by Ljubo Gamulin.
